Best / quickest way to improve health & stay fit?

I'm looking for answers really. I have ideas but would like to hear feedback from others to possibly add to my things to think about and put into practice. I'm not smoking anymore and have slowed WAY down on the drinking. But besides these obvious things what else can we do to get healthy and keep in shape? I know excercise & eating right. But any specific excercises & foods? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I've declared 2009 is my year. : )
