IMO. Why not just spell it out?

Seriously interested in an answer on this, because I'm mystified and frustrated.

I have just read a post in another forum, by an otherwise very literate and eloquent gentleman, whom for some reason, betrays his better knowledge and sees it as necessary to type 'IMO', every time he seeks to express that he is delivering his personal opinion. Why not just spell it out? Some people actually don't know what these silly acronyms mean.

This is the millionth time that I have been vexed by this as it is to be seen all over the place, and when it is employed by the otherwise literate, I find it bothers me a lot, because I cannot understand at all why it is employed, and yet only to express one's opinion - why? Is explaining your view on things something to be all mousy and ashamed of in America these days? So much so that it is considered necessary to 'express your opinion without really expressing it'?

It's even more cringe-worthy, when people put 'IM'H'O', especially as they do this when they are seeking to be anything but 'humble' when expressing the said opinion, but rather presuming an authoritative stance, which is actually why they say it in such a way, so that their feigned humility packs all the more impact as sarcasm.

Given as I am about as conversant with the weird and insidious linguistic fascism of political correctness as I am with mirror-writing in Mandarin, I wondered, might this have something to do with PC? Would it be that in America people dare not express their opinions in plain English in case their opinion should terribly upset some poor thing for it's having been expressed literally? Oh dear, best just use an acronym them, and talk in code.

I'm just perplexed by this phenomenom. When people write otherwise well written posts, only to have them dotted with 'IMO's' all over the place, which ruins a good post, is totally illogical, unclear to some, sloppy, and doubly offensive for it's squeamishly sickening pretense at attempting not to be so, making it in fact, hidden aggression and superciliousness, especially the 'IM'H'O'.

Why?

Oh yea, and no prizes for guessing that the next poster will put 'IMHO' to be facetious. ; )

That's interesting that you are vexed and perplexed by something so petty and insignificant. IMO is like LOL. Do you think people should spell it out everytime? It's an abbreviation. If people don't know what it stands for they can figure it out pretty easily. I dont think using an abbreviation equates being ashamed of expressing ones opinion. It just helps express it quicker. Life is short the clock is ticking. How long did you spend typing this question out? And how can you replace the 37 seconds of my life that you have wasted? LOL
